Evan Davis: too many 'old blokes' on BBC Radio 4's Today programme

The BBC's Radio 4 Today programme struggles not to have the "same old blokes", according to presenter Evan Davis who says and he is "acutely aware of its own shortcomings" over the lack of female presenters.

Mr Davis, one of the public broadcaster’s leading interviewers, said the BBC needs to do “quite a bit more” to promote female presenters on air.
Speaking at an industry awards ceremony yesterday, the veteran journalist said there was "definitely" more effort needed to promote women within the media, particularly the BBC.
He said: “Off air, I think they do all right. At the BBC we've had plenty of women in good management jobs.
“It comes and goes but there's been plenty. On air, I think there's quite a bit more we can do.”
His comments come amid criticism of the corporation over the lack of female presence on its main television and radio shows.
"I don't know what it is about the industry, but let's face it, this is one where they (women) do flourish and it's great to recognise that."
Figures show that fewer than one in five guests appearing on the Radio 4 show are women.
Among the winners at the awards yesterday was Clare Balding, who collected “achievement of the year” in recognition for her Olympic and Paralympic coverage.
The BBC sports presenter: "I think it's important for young girls who are, I hope, watching us and thinking 'that's a job I want to do' to know that warmth, humour, intelligence, doing your homework – that's what matters.
“I'm not getting this award because of what I look like, or my dress sense – we all know that."
